Article Topic:

How to copy a Directory Assistant policy from one Microsoft Exchange Site to another.

Applies To:

Directory Assistant 5.0 for Exchange 4.0, 5.0, and 5.5

Summary

This article demonstrates how to copy a Directory Assistant policy from one Exchange Site to another Exchange Site.  It does not matter if the source site and target site are in the same organization.

More Information

Directory Assistant policies can be copied from one Microsoft Exchange Site to another, however there are limitations.  If they are being used, the items "Authorizer" and "Allow users to modify these mailboxes" will not work until the administrator on the target site has manually set them.  If these two settings were configured on the source site, they will be referencing users unique to that source site.

To copy the configuration, follow these steps:

- Open the file folder share "MADSDA" on the server where the "DA Service" has been installed on the source site.

- Open the "Policies" subfolder.

- Locate the files that have the same name as the policy you want to copy.  Only copy the file with the extension ".dat".  Do not copy any other files with extensions such as ".dma" or ".usr".

(Example: "Policy 1.dat")

- On the target Exchange Site, copy the policy files to the "Policies" subfolder in the "MADSDA" share on the server where the "DA Service" is installed.

- If the MMC Console application for Directory Assistant is open when you copy the files, you may need to restart it before the copied policy appears in the MMC Console.

If you modify the policy at a future time on the source site and need to copy it to the target site, you will be able to follow the same procedure to copy the updated policy. The administrator on the target site does not need to re-assign the updated policy to users that already have it assigned on their site. In this case users accessing the Directory Assistant web pages will automatically get the new policy settings as soon as the files are copied, as long as they have that policy name assigned to them.
