Utilizing Directory Assistant on Small Business Server (SBS2003, SBS2008 or SBS2011), installing the software with the MMC on the server is recommended. The Directory Assistant service should also be installed on your Small Business Server. If utilizing SBS2008 or later, you will need to install the MAPI/CDO components from Microsoft. This is not necessary for SBS2003.
In environments with more than one server, the easiest and most simple architecture of Directory Assistant is to install all the software on a web server. In this configuration, the MMC console and Directory Assistant service are installed on the server and a small share is created for Directory Assistant to house data related to its configuration.
The architecture of Directory Assistant may be split to install the software and MMC on a terminal server or administrative workstation and the Directory Assistant services on a web server. A small share is created on the web server where Directory Assistant can house data related to its configuration.
